DETERMINATION OF THE MOVEMENT AND DEFLECTION OF RETAINING WALLS

PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SURVEILLANCE OF RETAINING WALLS HAS BEEN SHOWN TO PROVIDE THE DESIRED DEGREE OF ACCURACY NECESSARY FOR DETECTION OF MOVEMENT AND FOR CONTROL PURPOSES. SEVERAL POSSIBILITIES IN TERRESTRIAL PHOTOGRAMMETRY WERE INVESTIGATED TO DETERMINE THE OPTIMUM RESULTS, AND TO ARRIVE AT MEANINGFUL CONCLUSIONS. THE OPTIMUM CASE WAS FOUND TO BE THE USE OF STEREOPHOTOGRAPHS WHERE THE CAMERA AXIS IS PERPENDICULAR TO AN EASE LINE APPROXIMATELY PARALLEL TO THE RETAINING WALL. THE OPTIMUM GEOMETRY IS ONE BY WHICH THE RESIDUAL ERRORS IN THE THREE DIRECTIONS OF THE SPACE COORDINATE SYSTEM ARE APPROXIMATELY EQUAL TO EACH OTHER. THE ACCURACY ACHIEVED FROM THIS RESEARCH WILL BE PROVEN BY PRACTICAL EXAMPLES TO BE PRESENTED IN PART II OF THIS REPORT, AND A DISCUSSION OF AN EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATION. /AUTHOR/
