CONCRETE SURFACE FINISHES

A CONFERENCE REPORT IS PRESENTED BASED ON THE FOLLOWING THEMES: FORMWORK AND RELEASE AGENTS, FAIR FACE AND COLORED CONCRETE, PLASTER AND OTHER APPLIED FINISHES, FLOORS AND ROAD PAVEMENTS, EXPOSED AGGREGATES AND ARCHITECTURAL USE OF CONCRETE, AND SPECIFICATIONS OF DURABILITY OF CONCRETE SURFACES. THE FOLLOWING THREE PRINCIPAL TYPES OF CONCRETE FORM WORK ARE REVIEWED: (1) CONCRETE WITH AN APPLIED FINISH BONDED TO IT, (2) CONCRETE SURFACES WHICH REQUIRE NO FINISHING APPLICATION, AND (3) PATTERNED CONCRETE SURFACES REFERRED TO AS ARCHITECTURAL CONCRETE. FORM WORK FOR ARCHITECTURAL CONCRETE IS SPECIFICALLY DISCUSSED. THE RELEASE OF RELEASE AGENTS AND ENTRAPMENT OF AIR ARE SPECIFICALLY INVESTIGATED. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT CONCRETE SURFACE CAN BEST BE COLORED BY APPLICATION OF A PLASTER COAT OR BY PAINTING. AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO PLASTER A FAIRLY THICK COLORED CEMENT MIXTURE CONTAINING POLYVINYL ACETATE MAY BE USED. THIS IS BEST APPLIED WITH A TYROLEAN GUN TO GIVE A DURABLE TEXTURED FINISH WITH CLEAN FAST COLORING. THE NEED FOR BONDING AGENTS IN PLASTER COULD BE AVOIDED BY SPECIFYING AND REQUIRING THAT CONCRETE SURFACES TO BE PLASTERED HAVE A ROUGH TEXTURE. PLASTER COATS SHOULD BE BUILT UP WITH SUCCESSIVELY WEAKER MIXES FROM THE BASE OUT. PLASTER MIXES HAVING A LOW CEMENT CONTENT WOULD HAVE LOW CRACK RESISTANCE. RETARDERS CAN BE USED WITH GOOD RESULTS PROVIDED THEY ARE APPLIED CORRECTLY. NEW ZEALAND APPLIES PLASTER TO A VERTICAL SURFACE IN THREE COATS FOR AN ECONOMICAL PROCEDURE. MEMBRANE CURING OF PAVEMENTS IS DISCUSSED. TREATMENTS OF EXPOSED AGGREGATES SURFACE ARE DESCRIBED. FINISHING TECHNIQUES AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR CONCRETE SURFACE FINISHES ARE DISCUSSED.
