BRIDGE DEMOLITION AT OROVILLE DAM
A CONCRETE-ARCH STRUCTURE, HANSELLS BRIDGE, WAS DEMOLISHED IN THE OROVILLE DAM PROJECT. PLANS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BRIDGE WERE A BIG HELP IN PLANNING THE DEMOLITION. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO DROP THE STRUCTURE IN SUCH A WAY THAT VERY LITTLE ADDITIONAL WORK WOULD BE REQUIRED TO BURY OR REMOVE THE DEBRIS. FLYING PIECES COULD NOT BE TOLERATED AS THEY WOULD DAMAGE OTHER STRUCTURES AND FACILITIES IN THE AREA. THE MAIN PIERS WERE FELLED BY BLASTING OUT A V-SHAPED PIECE FROM EACH LEG, USING A SERIES OF EIGHT MILLISECOND DELAYS IN HOLES DRILLED IN THE PIERS. SIXTY PERCENT GELATIN WAS USED WITH REINFORCED PRIMACORD NO. 2 DELAYS, HDP-3 PRIMERS, AND INSTANT ELECTRIC BLASTING CAPS. WITH CAREFUL PLANNING AND METICULOUS PLACING OF CHARGES THE DEMOLITION WAS CARRIED OUT WITH NO DAMAGE OR DISTURBANCE TO THE PROJECT.
