SOIL CEMENT CONSTRUCTION ON THE ALBERTA FREEWAY

THE SOIL-CEMENT BASE PROCESS EMPLOYED IN ALBERTA WAS INITIATED INTO A FREEWAY PROJECT BETWEEN CALGARY AND EDMONTON, THIS BEING THE FIRST PROJECT ON THIS CLASS OF HIGHWAY IN THE PROVINCE. THIS HIGHWAY CROSSES AN AREA OF OLD SAND HILLS CONTAINING POORLY GRADED FINE MINERAL SAND WHICH WAS CLASSIFIED AS BEING SUITABLE FOR CEMENT STABILIZATION. THE MAJOR CONSIDERATION WAS ECONOMY DUE TO THE CLOSE SUPPLY OF THIS MINERAL SAND AS OPPOSED TO A LONG HAUL FOR SUITABLE GRAVEL FOR A GRAVEL BASE COURSE STRUCTURE. IN ADDITION TO THE HAUL SAVING, THERE WAS ALSO A QUANTITY SAVING, THUS PERMITTING THE PRESERVATION OF THE GRAVEL SUPPLIES FOR THE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVING WHICH WOULD COMPLETE THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE. ON THE BASIS OF PRELIMINARY ESTIMATES, IT WAS CONSIDERED THAT EQUAL STRENGTH BASE COURSE CONSTRUCTION COULD BE OBTAINED EMPLOYING SOIL-CEMENT WITH A REDUCTION IN OVERALL COST OF AT LEAST 10 PER CENT DUE TO THE LONGER HAUL FOR GRAVEL AND THE LARGER QUANTITY OF MATERIAL NECESSARY. THE PRODUCTION CONTROL PROCEDURE FOR THE SOIL CEMENT MATERIAL IS DESCRIBED. CONTROL CHARTS ON CEMENT CONTENT AND LAYER THICKNESS ARE PRESENTED. BENKELMAN BEAM DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE ON THE SUBGRADE AND SOIL CEMENT SURFACE TO MEASURE AND CONTROL UNIFORMITY. /AUTHOR/
