CONSTRUCTION OF A CONTINUOUSLY - REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENT IN SOUTH DAKOTA

TWO DEMONSTRATION SECTIONS OF CONTINUOUSLY-REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENT WERE CONSTRUCTED IN SOUTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA IN 1963. THE PURPOSE OF THESE SECTIONS WAS TO /A/ DEMONSTRATE THE FEASIBILITY OF CONTINUOUSLY-REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENT IN SOUTH DAKOTA, /B/ COMPARE THE RELATIVE MERITS OF FIXED VS. MOVABLE PAVEMENT ENDS, AND /C/ DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT DEPTHS OF LONGITUDINAL STEEL WITHIN THE PAVEMENT. THE DEMONSTRATION SECTIONS CONTAINED 0.646 PERCENT LONGITUDINAL STEEL PLACED WITH A STAGGERED OVERLAP. TWO STANDARD DESIGN CONTROL SECTIONS WERE ALSO CONSTRUCTED AT THE SAME TIME. THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE ENVIRONMENT, DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING OF THE CONTINUOUSLY-REINFORCED PAVEMENT SECTIONS AND THEIR CONTROL SECTIONS. A PROGRAM OF TESTING OF INDEFINITE DURATION IS TO CONTINUE, INCLUDING PRESENT SERVICEABILITY INDEX STUDIES, PAVEMENT MOVEMENT SURVEYS, AND CRACK WIDTH MEASUREMENTS. /AUTHOR/
