BEHAVIOR REINFORCED AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE SUBJECTED TO SHEAR FORCES

THE PRESENT PAPER IS AN ATTEMPT TO PESENT A GENERAL THEORY OF SHEAR. BECAUSE OF THE WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS INVOLVED IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE TO DEAL WITH EACH AS THOROUGHLY AS WOULD BE NORMAL IN A RESEARCH REPORT. THE PRESENTATION IS NONE THE LESS ANALYTICAL, RATHER THAN IN THE FORM OF DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS, IN ORDER THAT THE PHYSICAL BASIS OF THE THEORY SHALL NOT BE LOST IN THE SIMPLIFICATIONS THAT ARE NECESSARY FOR DESIGN. THE BASIS OF THE APPROACH IS IN ALL CASES A CONSIDERATION OF THE CONDITIONS OF EQUILIBRIUM AND COMPATIBILITY PERTAINING TO THE CRACKED STRUCTURE THAT IS FORMED AS A MEMBER SUBJECTED TO INCREASING LOAD. THE CRITERIA OF FAILURE USED ARE DIRECT PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCRETE WHICH CAN BE VERIFIED BY TESTS OF THE MATERIAL. THE COMPATIBILITY CONDITIONS ARE SIMPLIFIED BUT REALISTIC. /AUTHOR/
