A REVIEW OF FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH ON THE ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION

A DETAILED DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN FOR THE INITIAL REACTION OF SODIUM AND POTASSIUM HYDROXIDES, RESULTING FROM CEMENT HYDRATION, WITH CERTAIN SILICEOUS MINERALS IN THE AGGREGATE. THE RESULTANT GEL IS VARIABLE IN COMPOSITION, DEPENDING ON THE INITIAL PRODUCTS, AND IN PROPERTIES, DEPENDING ON SURROUNDING CONDITIONS AND WATER ABSORPTION. THREE HYPTHESES AS TO THE MECHANISM BY WHICH INTERNAL PRESSURES ARE DEVELOPED ARE DISCUSSED: OSMOTIC PRESSURE THEORY, SOLID SWELLING, SOLID OR FLUID PRESSURES. POZZOLANIC MATERIAL, LITHIUM SALTS, BARIUM AND MAGNESIUM OXIDES HAVE BEEN EXPERIMENTED WITH AS CHEMICAL INHIBITORS OF THE REACTION.
