EXPANSION OF CONCRETE PUMPED THROUGH ALUMINUM PIPELINE

THE USE OF ALUMINUM PIPELINES IN THE PUMPING OF CONCRETE HAS DEVELOPED LARGELY DUE TO THEIR LIGHTER WEIGHT AND CONSEQUENT EASIER HANDLING THAN THE COMPARABLY SIZED STEEL LINE. ALUMINUM POWER, IN THIS CASE ABRADED FROM THE PIPELINE, CAN REACT WITH PORTLAND CEMENT PASTE TO PRODUCE HYDROGEN GAS WHICH WILL HAVE AN EXPANSIVE EFFECT ON THE FRESHLY PLACED CONCRETE. THE EXPANSION AND LOSS OF STRENGTH OF CONCRETE PLACED ON A BRIDGE DECK BY PUMPING THROUGH AN ALUMINUM PIPELINE IS DOCUMENTED. ON THE BASIS OF THE STUDIES PERFORMED IT IS CONCLUDED THAT CONCRETE THAT IS FREE TO EXPAND IN AT LEAST ONE DIRECTION DURING THE SETTING AND EARLY HARDENING PERIOD SHOULD BE NOT PLACED BY PUMPING THROUGH AN ALUMINUM PIPELINE. /AUTHOR/
