NEW TECHNIQUE FOR ANALYSIS OF CLHORIDES IN MORTAR

A GREATLY SIMPLIFIED PROCEDURE FOR SAMPLING AND CHLORIDE ANALYSIS OF MORTAR HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. POWDERED SAMPLES, OBTAINED BY MEANS OF A MASONRY DRILL, ARE DRIED AND WEIGHED. THE WATER SOLUBLE CHLORIDES ARE THEN EXTRACTED BY SOAKING AND ARE MEASURED WITH A SPECIFIC ION ELECTRODE AND METER. IN SPECIMENS HAVING A CHLORIDE CONTENT GREATER THAN 0.1 PERCENT BY WEIGHT, THE COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION IN THIS METHOD WAS FOUND TO BE ACCEPTABLE. ONE ADVANTAGE OF THE CHLORIDE ANALYSIS METHOD DEVELOPED IS THAT A LARGE NUMBER OF MORTAR SPECIMENS CAN BE SAMPLED AND MEASURED EASILY AND QUICKLY FOR THEIR CHLORIDE CONTENTS. A SINGLE LABORATORY TECHNICIAN CAN SAMPLE, PREPARE, AND MEASURE SEVERAL HUNDRED SAMPLES A WEEK. THIS OFFERS A VAST IMPROVEMENT OVER OTHER METHODS OF CHLORIDE ANALYSIS. /AUTHUR/
