SOME INSIGHTS ON THE MECHANISM OF SACCHARIDE SET RETARDATION OF PORTLAND CEMENT

THE SET-RETARDING EFFECTS OF SACCHARIDE COMPUNDS (OR SUGARS AS THEY ARE COMMONLY CALLED) HAVE BEEN THE SUBJECT OF SEVERAL PAPERS IN PAST YEARS. IT IS WIDELY RECOGNIZED THAT ON A WEIGHT ADDITION BASIS, SUCROSE IS THE STRONGEST SET RETARDER OF THESE COMPOUNDS. HOWEVER, THE RELATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF OTHER SACCHARIDE COMPOUNDS AND THE MECHANISM OF SACCHARIDE SET RETARDATION HAS NOT BEEN MADE CLEAR. TO INVESTIGATE THIS MECHANISM, THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS SACCHARIDE COMPOUNDS ON THE HYDRATION OF A TYPE 1 PORTLAND CEMENT WAS INVESTIGATED USING ISOTHERMAL CALORIMETRY. THE RELATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF THESE COMPOUNDS AS SET RETARDERS WAS DETERMINED BOTH ON AN EQUIMOLAR AND ON AN EQUAL WEIGHT ADDITION BASIS. THE SET RETARDATION EFFICIENCY WAS SHOWN TO BE RELATED TO MOLECULAR WEIGHT AND STABILITY IN THE ALKALINE AQUEOUS PHASE OF HYDRATING CEMENT. /CCR/
