ANNUAL MOVEMENT STUDY OF BRIDGE DECK EXPANSION JOINTS
THE ANNUAL MOVEMENT OF APPROXIMATELY 231 EXPANSION JOINTS IN STEEL AND CONCRETE BRIDGES LOCATED IN COASTAL, VALLEY, DESERT, AND MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENTS WAS RECORDED EACH YEAR OVER A PERIOD OF THREE YEARS. THE RECORDED MOVEMENT WAS REDUCED BY A CORRECTION FACTOR WHICH INCLUDED ALLOWANCES FOR DIFFERENCES IN THERMAL COEFFICIENT OF EXPANSION AND TEMPERATURE CONDUCTIVITY BETWEEN METAL RAIL AND CONCRETE STRUCTURES, SPAN END ROTATION, INCOMPRESSIBLE DEBRIS IN THE DECK JOINT, AND TRUCK IMPACT. /BPR/
