COMPARATIVE TESTS OF SONISCOPES

IN MAY OF 1952, REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS , THE PORTLAND CEMENT ASSOCIATION, AND THE HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER COMMISSION OF ONTARIO, ASSEMBLED AT TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA, BRINGING SONISCOPES USED BY EACH ORGANIZATION. COMPARATIVE DETERMINATIONS OF VELOCITY WERE MADE AT STATIONS IN THE TUSCALOOSA LOCK WALL THAT HAD BEEN TESTED BY THE PCA IN 1947 WITH A SONISCOPE OF EARLIER DESIGN. OTHER DETERMINATIONS WERE MADE ON CONCRETE BLOCKS AND STRUCTURES LOCATED AT THE CONCRETE RESEARCH DIVISION, WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI. VELOCITY DETERMINATIONS IN UNCRACKED CONCRETE COULD GENERALLY BE REPRODUCED WITHIN 2 PERCENT BY THE SEVERAL INSTRUMENTS, OPERATORS, AND COMBINATIONS OF INSTRUMENT COMPONENTS AND OPERATORS. GREATER VARIATION WAS FOUND IN DETERMINATIONS OF VELOCITY IN CONCRETE CONTAINING CRACKS, THE DIFFERENCES BEING OF THE ORDER OF 20 PERCENT. GREATER VARIATION WAS ALSO FOUND FOR VERY SHORT PATH LENGTHS OF 1 FOOT OR LESS. THE CONCRETE IN TUSCALOOSA LOCK AT STATIONS, WHICH IN 1947 SHOWED VELOCITIES OF 13,000 TO 15,000 FEET PER SECOND, IN 1952 SHOWED GENERALLY SOMEWHAT HIGHER VELOCITIES. AT ONE STATION, NOT TESTED IN 1947, HAVING A PATH LENGTH OF 20.30 FEET, A DETERMINIATION OF VELOCITY WAS SUCCESSFULLY MADE BY ONLY ONE OF THE THREE SONISCOPES. THE INDICATED VELOCITY AT THIS STATION OF 13,480 FT. PER SEC. WAS THE LOWEST DETERMINED IN THE 1952 TESTS. /AUTHOR/
