LONG-TIME DURABILITY OF CONCRETE IN SEAWATER

DURING THE PAST 25 TO 30 YEARS, MORE THAN 2500 CONCRETE TEST SPECIMENS WERE EXPOSED TO SEAWATER AT A TEST STATION NEAR TRONDHEIM HARBOR, NORWAY. RESULTS FROM SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT LONG-TIME SERIES ARE PRESENTED. THE EFFECTS OF 18 DIFFERENT KINDS OF CEMENT; ADDITION OF TRASS, PRECURING, CEMENT CONTENT, WATER-CEMENT RATIO, AND SEAWATER VERSUS FRESH WATER AS MIXING WATER HAVE BEEN EXAMINED. THE BEHAVIOR OF THE CONCRETE WAS STUDIED BY FOLLOWING THE CHANGES OF FLEXURAL AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS. THE RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED AND INTERPRETED ON THE BASIS OF CHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION. /ACIJP/
