REVIEW OF DATA ON CALCIUM CHLORIDE ADMIXTURE METHOD OF CURING CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

THE RESULTS OF COMPRESSIVE AND FLEXURAL STRENGTH TESTS ON LABORATORY AND FIELD CURED SPECIMENS OF CONCRETE CONTAINING AN ADMIXTURE OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE ARE GIVEN. THESE RESULTS ARE EXPRESSED AS THE RATIOS OF THE STRENGTHS OF SIMILAR SPECIMENS CURED BY WET METHODS, MULTIPLIED BY 100. THESE STRENGTH RATIOS ARE THEREFORE THE PERCENTAGE OF MOIST CURED STRENGTH ATTAINED BY CALCIUM CHLORIDE CURED CONCRETE. THE LINEAL SHRINKAGE OF PLAIN CONCRETE IS COMPARED WITH CONCRETE IN WHICH AN ADMIXTURE OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE WAS USED. A SCALE SURVEY MADE IN PENNSYLVANIA BY THE PORTLAND CEMENT ASSOCIATION SHOWED NO APPRECIABLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WET AND CALCIUM CURED SECTIONS. CALCIUM CHLORIDE SPECIMENS NOT ONLY RETAINED MORE MOISTURE, BUT WHEN PLACED IN THE MOIST ROOM TOOK UP MOISTURE AT A FASTER RATE THAN PLAIN CONCRETE. INFORMATION INDICATED THAT THE USE OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE IN CONCRETE HAD NO DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON STEEL REINFORCEMENT. ADMIXTURE OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE REACTED DIFFERENTLY WITH DIFFERENT CEMENTS, BUT THE VARIATIONS IN STRENGTH APPEARED NO GREATER THAN THOSE FOUND IN THE STRENGTHS OF CONCRETE MADE FROM DIFFERENT CEMENTS IN WHICH NO ADMIXTURES WERE USED. IN SOME TEST RESULTS THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF THE ADMIXTURE CONCRETE WAS GENERALLY HIGHER THAN THE PLAIN CONCRETE AND THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH WAS GENERALLY LOWER. REACTIONS OCCURRING WHEN AN ADMIXTURE OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE IS USED WITH PORTLAND CEMENT WERE REPORTED; ALSO THE CONCLUSIONS. EXPERIMENTS SHOWED AN INCREASE IN STRENGTH UNDER LOW TEMPERATURES WHEN THE ADMIXTURE WAS USED. THE OPTIMUM PERCENTAGE OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE BY WEIGHT OF CEMENT WAS FOUND TO BE FROM 2 TO 4 PERCENT. BEYOND 6 TO 8 PERCENT FURTHER ADDITIONS PRODUCED REDUCTION IN STRENGTH IN COMPARISON WITH SIMILAR CONCRETE WITHOUT ADMIXTURES.
