THE EFFECTS OF SEA-SHELLS IN CONCRETE AGGREGATES

IN JUNE 1968 THE GREATER LONDON COUNCIL (GLC) PUBLISHED A MARINE AGGREGATES SPECIFICATION WHICH LIMITED THE PERMISSIBLE AMOUNT OF SHELL IN AGGREGATE FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE WORK. AS A RESULT THE SAND AND GRAVEL ASSOCIATION UNDERTOOK A LABORATORY RESEARCH PROGRAM TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF SHELL ON THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE. IN GENERAL, IT IS CONCLUDED THAT WORKABLE CONCRETE CAN BE MADE WITH AMOUNTS OF SHELL OF WELL BEYOND THOSE ENCOUNTERED IN SEA- DREDGED AGGREGATES WITHOUT AFFECTING THE IMPORTANT PROPERTIES REQUIRED IN STRUCTURAL CONCRETE. WITH RESPECT TO THE GLC SPECIFICATION, SHELL CONTENTS OF TWICE THE LIMIT SPECIFIED WERE EMPLOYED WHILE MAINTAINING THE PROPERTIES OF THE HARDENED CONCRETE. HOLLOW SHELLS WERE FOUND TO PERFORM AS WELL AS FLAT SHELLS. THE CONCLUSIONS REACHED FROM THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATIONS ARE SUMMARIZED. /AUTHOR/
