FIRE RESISTANCE OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS. STUDY B. INFLUENCE OF AGGREGATE AND LOAD INTENSITY

PARTICULAR ATTENTION WAS GIVEN IN THIS STUDY TO THE INFLUENCE OF AGGREGATE TYPE AND LOAD INTENSITY ON FIRE RESISTANCE. SIXTEEN PRETENSIONED PRESTRESSED I-BEAMS, DESIGNED FOR A 20-FT SPAN, WERE SUBJECTED TO THE STANDARD FIRE TEST TO LOAD FAILURE. REPRESENTED IN THIS GROUP OF BEAMS WERE 3 NORMAL-WEIGHT-TYPE AGGREGATES AND 3 COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE EXPANDED SHALE AGGREGATES. SIX BEAMS WERE GIVEN FIRE TESTS UNDER VARIOUS SPECIAL CONDITIONS. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT AGGREGATE TYPE HAS AN INFLUENCE ON THE FIRE RESISTANCE OF PRESTRESSED BEAMS THAT ARE TESTED WITHOUT RESTRAINT AND THAT LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE OF EXPANDED SHALE TENDS TO HAVE SOMEWHAT GREATER FIRE ENDURANCE THAN NORMAL-WEIGHT CONCRETE. DOLOMITIC AGGREGATE WAS SHOWN TO HAVE SOME ADVANTAGE OVER SILICEOUS AGGREGATE IN CONCRETE. THE COMPRESSION ZONE OF HIGHLY STRESSED I-SHAPED BEAMS WAS SOMEWHAT VULNERABLE TO THE DETERIORATING EFFECTS OF FIRE. /PCA/
