EFFECT OF SURFACE GRINDING AND JOINT SAWING ON THE DURABILITY OF PAVING CONCRETE
SPECIMENS FOR FREEZE-THAW TESTING WERE MADE FROM CONCRETES CONTAINING COARSE AGGREGATE FROM 3 DIFFERENT SOURCES. SURFACES OF TEST SPECIMENS WERE REMOVED TO 2 DEPTHS, WHILE OTHER SPECIMENS WERE LEFT WITH THEIR SURFACES INTACT, TO ACT AS CONTROLS. WHILE THE REMOVAL OF THIN LAYERS FROM FINISHED CONCRETE SURFACES DID NOT MATERIALLY AFFECT THE DURABILITY, REMOVAL OF A DEPTH SUFFICIENT TO EXPOSE LARGE AREAS OF COARSE AGGREGATE GREATLY INCREASED THE DURABILITY REQUIREMENT OF THE AGGREGATE. OTHER SPECIMENS CAST FROM THE SAME CONCRETES WERE SAWED TO 1 3/4-IN. DEPTH LONGITUDINALLY. JOINT SAWING PER SE DID NOT ADVERSELY AFFECT THE DURABILITY OF CONCRETES MADE WITH DURABLE AGGREGATE. /PCA/
