AN OPTICAL METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE ELASTICITY CONSTANTS OF CONCRETE

A DEVELOPMENT BY THE FIRE RESEARCH LABORATORY IS DISCUSSED OF AN OPTICAL METHOD FOR DETERMING THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY, THE MODULUS OF SHEAR AND POISSON'S RATIO OF CONCRETE UNDER STATIC LOADING CONDITIONS, WITH VARIATIONS IN THE TEMPERATURE OF THE CONCRETE AS AN ADDITIONAL FACTOR. THE METHOD CONSISTS OF ECCENTRICALLY LOADING A CYLINDRICAL CONCRETE SPECIMEN AS A CANTILEVER AND MEASURING THE ANGULAR DISPLACEMENTS DUE TO BENDING AND TORSION BY THE DEVELOPED OPTICAL PROCEDURE. VALUES FOR COMPUTING THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY, E, AND MODULUS OF SHEAR, G, MAY THEREBY BE OBTAINED SIMULTANEOUSLY. MODULUS OF ELASTICITY RESULTS FROM A SERIES OF TESTS AT 73, 350, 700, AND 1000 F ARE COMPARED WITH VALUES OBTAINED BY A DYNAMIC METHOD. AT TEMPERATURES OF 800 TO 900 F THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY WAS ABOUT HALF THAT AT 73 F. /PCA/
