ELECTRON OPTICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE HYDRATION PRODUCTS OF CALCIUM SILICATES AND PORTLAND CEMENT

BETA DICALCIUM SILICATE AND TRICALCIUM SILICATE HAVE BEEN HYDRATED AT ROOM TEMPERATURE BY 3 PROCEDURES: (1) HYDRATION IN PASTE FORM, WITH A WATER-TO-SOLID WEIGHT RATIO OF 0.7; (2) HYDRATION WITH AN EXCESS OF WATER IN A ROTATED POLYTHENE BOTTLE; AND (3) HYDRATION IN A SMALL STEEL BALL MILL. IN THE SECOND AND THIRD METHODS, THE WATER-TO-SOLID RATIO WAS 9.0. THE HYDRATION PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN EXAMINED IN THE ELECTRON MICROSCOPE AND A DESCRIPTION OF THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE PRODUCTS IS GIVEN. SERIES OF PASTES MADE FROM A NORMAL PORTLAND CEMENT AND A LOW-HEAT CEMENT, W/C = 0.4, CURED FOR TIMES RANGING FROM A FEW MINUTES TO SEVERAL MONTHS, HAVE BEEN STUDIED. A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF COLLOIDAL HYDRATION PRODUCTS IN PORTLAND CEMENT PASTES IS GIVEN. THE RESULTS SUGGEST A MECHANISM FOR THE SETTING OF PORTLAND CEMENT PASTES. /PCA/
