SOME PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE HYDRATION OF PORTLAND CEMENT

THE HYDRATION OF PORTLAND CEMENT REQUIRES A DOUBLING OF THE VOLUME OF SOLIDS IN A SPECIMEN OF PASTE. HALF OF THE REACTION PRODUCTS ARE DEPOSITED INSIDE THE BOUNDARIES OF THE CEMENT GRAINS, AND HALF OUTSIDE, SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE PROCESS REQUIRES AN INSOLUBLE MATERIAL TO REMAIN IN "SOLUTION" FOR GREAT LENGTHS OF TIME. ALSO, THE PROCESS OCCURS WITHOUT MUCH DILATION OF THE SPECIMEN. THESE ASPECTS OF HYDRATION PRESENT A PROBLEM OF UNDERSTANDING NOT READILY EXPLAINABLE IN CONVENTIONAL TERMS OF CHEMISTRY. AN EXPLANATION IS GIVEN, SHOWING HOW THE CHEMICAL PROCESSES ARE CONTROLLED BY PHYSICAL CONDITIONS PECULIAR TO A SYSTEM GIVING A GEL AS A REACTION PRODUCT. /PCA/
