SOME ASPECTS OF DURABILITY AND VOLUME CHANGE OF CONCRETE FOR PRESTRESSING

A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF LABORATORY TESTS PERFORMED TO EVALUATE THE RESISTANCE TO FREEZING AND THAWING AND TO DE-ICER SCALING OF CONCRETES TYPICAL OF THOSE USED IN THE FABRICATION OF PRESTRESSED ELEMENTS. BOTH NON-AIR-ENTRAINED AND AIR-ENTRAINED CONCRETES MADE WITH TYPE I AND TYPE III PORTLAND CEMENTS WERE INCLUDED IN THIS STUDY. THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS CURING PROCEDURES WAS EVALUATED, BOTH AT NORMAL TEMPERATURE AND ELEVATED TEMPERATURE. IN ADDITION, THE EFFECT OF A PRESTRESS PRODUCING 350 TO 400 PSI COMPRESSION IN THE CONCRETE ON THE RESISTANCE TO FREEZING AND THAWING WAS DETERMINED. /PCA/
