INVESTIGATION OF COLLOIDAL HYDRATED SILICATES. I. SOLUBILITY PRODUCTS

THE SOLUBILITY PRODUCTS OF THESE COLLOIDAL SUBSTANCES WERE EVALUATED BY APPLYING THE ACTIVITY PRODUCT EQUATIONS. HYDRATED CALCIUM SILICATES WITH MOLE RATIOS CALCIUM OXIDE SILICON OXIDE BETWEEN 0.8 AND 1.5:1 WERE PREPARED AT 85 C. THE DATA FOR THE 1.0, 1.2 AND 1.5:1 MOLE RATIO HYDRATES SHOW THAT THE SOLUBILITY PRODUCT IS 7.0 PLUS OR MINUS 0.1 AT 25 C. EQUATION 2 AGREES WITH DATA FOR THE 0.8:1 HYDRATE AND THE SOLUBILITY PRODUCT VALUE IS 8.5 PLUS OR MINUS 0.1. THE SOLUBILITY VALUES ARE ASSIGNED TO THE EQUILIBRIUM BETWEEN SOLID HYDRATED CALCIUM SILICATE AND WATER. A SEPARATE EQUILIBRIUM IS ASSUMED TO EXIST BETWEEN THE CALCIUM HYDROXIDE IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION AND THAT DISSOLVED IN THE SOLID HYDRATED CALCIUM SILICATE. /PLA/
