QUANTITATIVE DETERMINATION OF THE FOUR MAJOR PHASES IN PORTLAND CEMENT BY X-RAY ANALYSIS

A METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE DIRECT DETERMINATION OF THE FOUR MAJOR PHASES (TRICALCIUM SILICATE, DICALCIUM SILICATE, TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE AND CALCIUM ALUMINOFERRITE) AND FOR THE COMPOSITION OF THE CALCIUM ALUMINOFERRITE PHASE IN PORTLAND CEMENT BY X-RAY QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS. THE X-RAY METHOD RESULTS ARE SYSTEMATICALLY SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN THE COMBINED X-RAY-CHEMICAL-ANALYSIS METHOD RESULTS FOR ALL PHASES EXCEPT TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE, FOR WHICH THE METHODS ARE IN EXCELLENT AGREEMENT. THE VALUES FOR THE PHASES OBTAINED BY THE FOUR AVAILABLE METHODS ARE COMPARED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE X-RAY METHOD GIVES MORE ACCURATE RESULTS THAN THE TWO OLDER METHODS. THE X-RAY METHOD APPEARS TO HAVE POSSIBILITIES TO REPLACE POTENTIAL COMPOUND CALCULATION IN INDUSTRIAL PRACTICE. /PCA/
