PETROGRAPHY OF CEMENT AND CONCRETE

CONVENTIONAL PETROGRAPHY HAS DEVELOPED AS A TECHNIQUE FOR THE STUDY OF ROCKS, MOSTLY BY MEANS OF THIN SECTIONS, AND THE TECHNIQUE HAS SERVED WELL IN ELUCIDATION OF MINERAL COMPOSITION, STRUCTURE, ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF NATURAL ROCKS. APPLICATIONS TO STUDY OF PORTLAND CEMENT AND CLINKER HAVE MADE NECESSARY EXTENSIVE SUPPLEMENT BY THE METALLOGRAPHIC MICROSCOPE AND STUDY OF POLISHED SECTIONS. THE TECHNIQUE OF THIN SECTIONS HAS BEEN SUPERSEDED LARGELY BY THE EASIER PREPARATION OF POWDER MOUNTS. APPLICATION TO PROBLEMS OF CONCRETE HAS REQUIRED FURTHER BROADENING OF THE TECHNIQUE. THE STEREOSCOPIC BINOCULAR IS FOUND TO BE THE GENERALLY MORE USEFUL AND INFORMATIVE MICROSCOPE, WITH AID OF THE PETROGRAPHIC AND METALLOGRAPHIC MICROSCOPES WHERE HIGHER MAGNIFICATION IS SPECIALLY REQUIRED. /PCA/
