THE STOICHIOMETRY OF THE HYDRATION OF BETA-DICALCIUM SILICATE AND TRICALCIUM SILICATE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE

THE HYDRATION OF BETA DICALCIUM SILICATE WAS CARRIED OUT AT ROOM TEMPERATURE BY THREE METHODS: (1) IN A SMALL STEEL BALL MILL, (2) IN PASTE FORM, AND (3) IN A POLYETHYLENE BOTTLE ROTATED ON A WHEEL. TRICALCIUM SILICATE WAS HYDRATED BY METHODS (2) AND (3). THE PROBABLE STOICHIOMETRY IS REPRESENTED BY GIVEN EQUATIONS. THE SAME CALCIUM SILICATE HYDRATE WAS PRODUCED IN ALL FIVE CASES, AND IT WAS SIMILAR TO THE NATURAL MINERAL TOBERMORITE. THE CALCIUM HYDRATE WAS OBTAINED IN TWO FORMS. RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SURFACE AREA, PARTICLE DIMENSIONS, CRYSTAL STRUCTURE AND CERTAIN SWELLING PROPERTIES OF TOBERMORITE ARE DISCUSSED. /PCA/
