A POLAROGRAPHIC METHOD FOR THE DIRECT DETERMINATION OF ALUMINUM OXIDE IN PORTLAND CEMENT

A POLAROGRAPHIC METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE DIRECT DETERMINATION OF ALUMINUM OXIDE IN PORTLAND CEMENT. CHEMICAL PREPARATION OF THE CEMENT INVOLVES SEPARATION OF THE SILICA AND PRECIPITATION OF THE AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE GROUP. A SOLUTION OF THIS PRECIPITATE IS USED FOR THE ELECTROLYSIS STEP. CAREFUL CONTROL OF ACIDITY IS A NECESSITY BECAUSE THE ALUMINUM POLAROGRAPHIC WAVE IS ONLY SLIGHTLY SEPARATED FROM THE HYDROGEN WAVE. ANALYZED LIMESTONES OR CEMENTS ARE USED AS STANDARDS. THE METHOD GIVES GOOD RESULTS AS COMPARED WITH USUAL 'BY DIFFERENCE' DETERMINATIONS. ABOUT 3 DAYS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF A SET OF SAMPLES. /PCA/
