THE CATALYTIC ACTION OF SODIUM CHLORIDE ON THE DECOMPOSITION OF DOLOMITE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF MAGNESIUM OXYCHLORIDE CEMENT

AN ADMIXTURE OF SODIUM CHLORIDE IN QUANTITIES RANGING FROM 0.1 TO 1.0% TO DOLOMITE PROGRESSIVELY LOWERS THE DECOMPOSITION TEMPERATURE OF MAGNESIUM CARBONATE, WHEREAS THAT OF CALCIUM CARBONATE REMAINS UNCHANGED. DOLOMITE EXHIBITS TWO PEAKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DECARBONATION TEMPERATURES OF MAGNESIUM CARBONATE AND CALCIUM CARBONATE, NAMELY, AT 810C AND 900C. WHEN 0.5% SODIUM CHLORIDE IS ADDED, THE PEAKS OCCUR AT 700C AND 900C. AS A RESULT OF THE USE OF SODIUM CHLORIDE AS A CATALYST, THE CONTROL OF THE BURNING OF DOLOMITE FOR MAKING OXYCHLORIDE CEMENT IS FACILITATED. WITHOUT THE ADMIXTURE, ONLY DOLOMITE BURNED AT 750C WILL GIVE GOOD STRENGTHS IN THE OXYCHLORIDE CEMENT. ON THE OTHER HAND, WHEN SODIUM CHLORIDE IS ADDED, SERVICEABLE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS IN THE OXYCHLORIDE CEMENT ARE OBTAINED FOR DOLOMITE BURNING TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 650C AND 750C. /AUTHOR/
