PROCESS COMPUTER SYSTEMS FOR THE CEMENT AND LIME INDUSTRY

AFTER BRIEFLY SURVEYING THE METHODS HITHERTO EMPLOYED FOR MONITORING AND CONTROLLING CEMENT PRODUCTION PROCESS, THE AUTHOR CALLS ATTENTION TO THE IMPORTANCE OF PROCESS COMPUTER SYSTEMS FOR AUTOMATION. THE STRUCTURE AND BASIC FUNCTIONS OF SUCH SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED, WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF DIRECT DIGITAL CONTROL FOR THE SOLVING OF CONTROL PROBLEMS. THE NATURE AND SCOPE OF PROGRAMMING ARE EXPLAINED. THE APPLICATION OF PROCESS COMPUTER SYSTEMS HAS ITS MAIN FOCUS IN THE PREPARATION AND BLENDING OF THE RAW MATERIALS. APPLICATION TO THE PRELIMINARY BLENDING OF THE RAW STONE (QUALITY CONTROL, MIXING BED SYSTEM) IS DEALT WITH, AND THE CONTROL OF THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF RAW MEAL FOR CEMENT MANUFACTURE IS DESCRIBED. THE SMALL PROCESS COMPUTER SYSTEM NEEDED FOR THIS CONTROL CONSTITUTES THE BASIC STAGE IN THE AUTOMATION OF A CEMENT WORKS: IT CAN ADDITIONALLY BE USED FOR SOLVING THE CONTROL PROBLEMS ARISING IN A RAW MATERIAL GRINDING PLANT (DDC APPLICATION), FOR MONITORING AND CONTROLLING THE GRINDING PLANT AND DETERMING THE CHARACTERISTICS THEREOF. THE POSSIBILITIES OF EMPLOYING THE PROCESS COMPUTER SYSTEM OF KILN OPERATION, THE MAIN COMPUTER/SATELLITE COMPUTER SYSTEM AND THE OFF-LINE FUNCTIONS OF THE COMPUTER ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
