EXISTENCE RANGE AND STABILIZATION OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE MODIFICATIONS OF DICALCIUM SILICATE

THE EXISTENCE RANGES AND THE STABILISATION OF HIGH- TEMPERATURE MODIFICATIONS OF DICALCIUM SILICATE ARE EXPERIMENTALLY INVESTIGATED AND DISCUSSED WITH REFERENCE TO THE LITERATURE. FIRST, IN CONFORMITY WITH THE TEST RESULTS OF OTHER AUTHORS, A SCHEMATIC SURVEY OF THE STABILITY RANGES IS PRESENTED, BASED ON FOUR DIFFERENT MODIFICATIONS OF DICALCIUM SILICATE. NONE OF THE TESTS REVEALS ANY INDICATION OF THE EXISTENCE OF TWO VARIETIES OF ALPHA AND OF BETA. IN THE SECOND PART, TESTS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE STABILITY CONDITIONS OF BETA AND ALPHA DICALCIUM SILICATE WITH THE AID OF VARIOUS SUBSTANCES BY CRYSTAL CHEMICAL PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED. IN THIS CONNECTION THE DIFFERENT RESULTS OBTAINED BY SOME AUTHORS WITH REGARD TO THE STABILISING EFFECT OF CHROMIUM OXIDE AND MAGNESIUM OXIDE ARE GIVEN AN INTERPRETATION. IN THESE TWO CASES STABILIZATION IS POSSIBLE ONLY IF THE PARTIAL OXYGEN PRESSURE EXISTING IN THE TEST IS SUFFICIENT TO FORM CHROMIUM AND MAGNESIUM IONS RESPECTIVELY. IT IS FURTHER SHOWN THAT THE STABILISING IONS CAN IN PART BE REPLACED BY IRON, MANGANESE AND MAGNESIUM SILICATE. ON THE BASIS OF THE STABILISATION TESTS IT IS POSSIBLE, FROM CRYSTAL CHEMICAL CONSIDERATIONS, TO ESTABLISH A HYPOTHESIS WHICH EXPLAINS THE PRESENCE OF HIGH- TEMPERATURE MODIFICATIONS OF DICALCIUM SILICATE OUTSIDE ITS THERMODYNAMIC RANGE OF EXISTENCE IN THERMS OF NUCLEUS FORMATION PROCESSES. /AUTHOR/
