EVALUATION OF PULSE VELOCITY TESTS

A SONISCOPE WAS USED BY THE CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS TO TEST CONCRETE AND TIMBER STRUCTURES. IT IS, FOR EXAMPLE, USEFUL IN DETECTING HIDDEN DECAY IN WOOD BRIDGE PILES AND TIMBERS. DETERIORATION OF CONCRETE DUE TO ALKALI- AGGREGATE REACTION WAS STUDIED WITH THE SONISCOPE ON 25- TO 30-YEAR OLD BRIDGES. THE PULSE VELOCITIES, IN THIS CASE, VARIED OVER A CONSIDERABLE RANGE WITHIN SHORT DISTANCES, A RESULT THAT IS DUE TO RANDOM DISTRIBUTION OF CRACKS OF VARYING WIDTH AND DEPTH. IN COOPERATION WITH THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON COMPANY AND THE PORTLAND CEMENT ASSOCIATION, COMPARATIVE TESTS FOR PULSE VELOCITY WERE MADE WITH THREE SONISCOPES. EXCELLENT AGREEMENT WAS FOUND.
