THE PROTECTED PASTE VOLUME CONCEPT USING NEW AIR-VOID MEASUREMENT AND DISTRIBUTION TECHNIQUES

THE DISTRIBUTION OF ENTRAINED AIR BUBBLES IN HARDENED CONCRETE HAS NOT BEEN STUDIED EXTENSIVELY OR APPLIED TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF FROST RESISTANCE. THE IMPERFECT PERFORMANCE OF COMMONLY USED AIR-VOID PARAMETERS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MECHANIZED COUNTING EQUIPMENT MOTIVATED THE RESEARCH ON BUBBLE DISTRIBUTION, ITS MEASUREMENT AND APPLICATION, DESCRIBED IN THIS PAPER. A CHORD SIZE DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION WHICH CLOSELY APPROXIMATES MEASURED DISTRIBUTIONS IS PRESENTED. FROM THIS, AN EQUATION FOR THE NUMBER OF BUBBLES PER UNIT VOLUME OF PASTE IS DERIVED. THIS NUMBER IS USED IN APPLYING PHILLEO'S PROTECTED PASTE VOLUME CONCEPT. TWO LINEAR EQUATIONS ARE USED TO APPROXIMATE PHILLEO'S SPACING FACTOR EQUATION AT ONE PROBABILITY LEVEL (0.9). TEST EVALUATED FOR FROST RESISTANCE USING THE POWERS CYCLE. TENTH-CYCLE DILATIONS ARE USED AS THE MEASURE OF FROST DAMAGE. THE PHILLEO SPACING FACTOR CORRELATED BEST WITH TENTH-CYCLE DILATIONS. /JM/
