COMPARISON OF MODULE OBTAINED BY DIFFERENT TEST METHODS FOR GRAVEL-SAND MIXTURES TREATED WITH HYDRAULIC BINDERS (IN FRENCH)

A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO COMPARE VARIOUS METHODS OF MEASURING THE MODULI OF COMPRESSION OF GRAVEL-SAND MIXTURES TREATED WITH HYDRAULIC BINDERS. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE FACT THAT SAMPLES OF SLENDERNESS 1 COMPACTED WITH A KANGO VIBRATING HAMMER DO NOT GIVE ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS. TEST RESULTS LEAD TO THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: (1) IF THE RATE OF PROGRESSION OF THE PLATES OF THE ANGERS MECHANICAL PRESS IS ASSUMED TO BE CONSTANT, THE MEASUREMENT OF THE TOTAL DEFORMATION (BETWEEN THE PLATES) OF THE SAMPLE IS NOT ACCURATE. THE FORMATION OF THE PRESS AND BALANCE MUST BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN RELATION TO THE DEFORMATION OF THE SAMPLE. (2) IF THE TOTAL DEFORMATION (BETWEEN THE PLATES) OF THE SAMPLE IS TAKEN AS DEFORMATION VALUE, THE CALCULATION OF THE MODULI WILL GIVE VALUES MUCH LOWER THAN REAL VALUES; THIS IS DUE TO THE COMPACTION OF THE PART OF THE SAMPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF THE PRESS PLATES WHICH RESULTS IN CONSIDERABLE DEFORMATION COMPARED TO THAT IN THE CENTER OF THE SAMPLE. IN ORDER TO OBTAIN ACCURATE CALCULATION OF THE MODULUS, THE DEFORMATION IN THE CENTRE OF THE SAMPLE MUST BE TAKEN AS BEING THE DEFORMATION OF THE MATERIAL. RESULTS OBTAINED WITH STRAIN GAUGES GLUED ON SAMPLES SHOW THAT MODULI, TANGENTIAL TO THE ORIGIN, WHICH ARE OBTAINED FROM MEASUREMENTS OF DEFORMATION IN THE CENTER OF THE SAMPLE, ARE EQUAL TO THOSE OBTAINED WITH THE SPEED OF SOUND, AND THAT THE MODULUS DECREASES GREATLY WHEN COMPRESSION STRESS INCREASES. /LCPC/A/RRL/
