SHOULD STANDARD CUBE TEST SPECIMENS BE REPLACED BY TEST SPECIMENS TAKEN FROM STRUCTURES

RESULTS OF STUDIES ARE PRESENTED DURING WHICH CONCRETE STRENGTH WAS DETERMINED ON STANDARD TEST SPECIMENS, TEST SPECIMENS ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE, AND CORE SAMPLES TAKEN FROM STRUCTURES. RESULTS SHOW THAT THE STRENGTH OF IN-SITU TEST SPECIMENS AND CORE SAMPLES WAS LOWER THAN THAT OF STANDARD TEST SPECIMENS. THE BASIC FACTORS WHICH CAUSE THESE DIFFERENCES IN STRENGTH SEEM TO BE: THE ORDER OF STRENGTH, CURING METHODS, TYPE AND SIZE OF STRUCTURES, CEMENT TYPE, AND COMPACTION. MENTION IS MADE OF THE PROBLEMS OF EVALUATING THE STRENGTH OF CORE SAMPLES. /LCPC(A)/RRL/
