STRENGTH OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS WITH WEB REINFORCEMENT

THE EFFECT OF WEB REINFORCEMENT ON THE STRENGTH OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS SUBJECTED TO COMBINED BENDING AND SHEAR IS STUDIED TO DEVELOP A WORKABLE METHOD OF DESIGNING THE WEB REINFORCEMENT. THE PROPOSED METHOD ASSUMES A BEAM TO CARRY SHEAR CORRESPONDING TO THE INCLINED CRACKING LOAD WITHOUT AID FROM STIRRUPS AND CALLS FOR THE ADDITION OF STIRRUPS TO CARRY ANY ADDITIONAL SHEAR PERSENT. TEST RESULTS OF 104 SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAMS PROVIDE A BASIS FOR EVALUATING THE RELATIVE EFFECTS OF DRAPED STRAND AND STIRRUPS IN RESISTING FLEXURE AND SHEAR CRACKING. THEORETICAL ANALYSES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED PREVIOUSLY TO EXPLAIN THE EFFECT OF WEB REINFORCEMENT ON THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF CONCRETE BEAMS. THEIR UTILIZATION IS SO COMPLEX THAT THE DETERMINATION OF THE CAPACITY OF BEAMS WITH WEB REINFORCEMENT IS GENERALLY PERFORMED EMPIRICALLY. AN EMPIRICAL EXPRESSION IS PROVIDED WHICH PREDICTS THE STRENGTH OF BEAMS WITH WEB REINFORCEMENT AS DERIVED FROM EXPERIMENTAL DATA. SHEAR FAILURES ARE PREVENTED BY PROVIDING WEB REIN- FORCEMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS EXPRESSION. DRAPED REIN- FORCEMENT, EITHER ALONE OR IN COMBINATION WITH WEB REIN- FORCEMENT, WAS FOUND TO DECREASE THE FLEXURE-SHEAR CRACKING LOAD.
