SOME PROPERTIES AND SELECTION OF ADMIXTURES FOR CONCRETE

THE ABSORPTIONAL PHYSICO-CHEMICAL MECHANISM OF THE ACTION VARIOUS SURFACE-ACTIVE ORGANIC ADMIXTURES ON THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED IN DETAIL IN THE USSR. ADMIXTURES CAN BE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO THEIR PHYSICO- CHEMICAL NATURE. TWO PRINCIPAL GROUPS OF ADMIXTURES: (1) HYDROPHILIZING AGENTS (WETTING AGENTS) AND (2) HYDROPHOBIZING AGENTS HAVE COME INTO COMMON USE IN CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE. AS A RULE, HYDROPHILIZING AGENTS ACT AS PLASTICIZERS WHILE HYDROPHOBIZING AGENTS ENSURE AIR ENTRAINMENT. BESIDES THERE ARE ADMIXTURES PROVIDING BOTH A PLASTICIZING AND AIR-ENTRAINING EFFECT. THE ADMIXTURES SUBSTANTIALLY CHANGE THE STRUCTURE OF CONCRETE AND PARTICULARLY ITS DENSITY AND THE NATURE OF ITS POROSITY. SOME OF NEW ASPECTS OF THE COMPLEX EFFECT OF ADMIXTURES ARE STILL TO BE INVESTIGATED. IN EACH CASE OF SELECTION AND USE OF ADMIXTURES THE SPECIAL TESTS HAVE TO BE CARRIED OUT. A DECISIVE SIGNIFICANCE HAVE THE TESTS OF ADMIXTURES IN TRIAL CONCRETE MIXES APPROPRIATE TO THE PARTICULAR USE AT THE GIVEN CONSTRUCTION SITE. /CRIC/FESR/ LCPC/RRL/A/
