BOLTED JOINTS WITH MAIN PLATES OF DIFFERENT THICKNESSES

ELEMENTS OF SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THICKNESS WITHIN THE SAME STRUCTURAL JOINT MAY NEED TO BE ACCOMMODATED. TESTS WERE MADE ON BOLTED JOINTS IN WHICH THE MAIN PLATES WERE OF DIFFERENT THICKNESSES, I.E., 1 INCH AND 7/8 INCH, AND 1 INCH AND 15/16 INCH. THE JOINTS WERE COMPRISED OF PLATES OF A-7 STEEL CONNECTED WITH 3/4 INCH DIAMETER A-325 HIGH STRENGTH BOLTS. THE INFLUENCE OF THE THINNER PLATE ON THE TOTAL LOAD NECESSARY TO CAUSE MAJOR SLIP IN THE JOINT WAS DETERMINED. THE EFFICIENCY OF THE JOINT WAS VARIED BY /1/ INCREASING THE NUMBER OF BOLTS, /2/ INCREASING THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BUTT EDGE AND THE FIRST ROW OF BOLTS, AND /3/ OVER- TIGHTENING THE FIRST AND SECOND ROWS OF BOLTS THROUGH THE THINNER PLATE. SLIP AND ELONGATION WERE MEASURED. THE CLAMPING ACTION OF THE BOLTS THROUGH THE THINNER MAIN PLATE AT ONE AND ONE-HALF INCHES FROM THE BUTT EDGE WAS NOT DEVELOPED WHEN THE DIFFERENCE IN THICKNESS WAS 1/8 INCH, AND ONLY 50 PERCENT DEVELOPED WHEN THE DIFFERENCE IN THICKNESS WAS 1/16 INCHES. OVERTIGHTENING OF THE BOLTS IN THE FIRST AND SECOND ROWS THROUGH THE THINNER PLATE DID NOT IMPROVE THE CLAMPING ACTION, BUT CAUSED LOCAL YIELDING IN THE LAP PLATES. THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY IN RESISTING SLIP IN A JOINT WITH DIFFERENCES IN THICKNESSES IN THE MAIN PLATES APPEARS TO BE BY INCREASING THE DISTANCE FROM THE BUTT EDGE OF THE THINNER PLATE TO THE FIRST ROW OF BOLTS.
