A CONTRIBUTION TO THE MEASUREMENT OF THE ADHESIVE CAPACITY OF PULVERULENT MATERIALS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO CALCIUM OXIDE AND CALCIUM HYDROXIDE

THE TESTS REPORTED IN THIS ARTICLE HAVE SHOWN THE PRINCIPAL FACTORS AFFECTING THE ADHESIVE CAPACITY OF SMALL PARTICLES TO BE THE FOLLOWING: (1) SURFACE PROPERTIES, DUE TO MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS, OF THE PARTICLE SIZE FRACTIONS, (2) MEAN PARTICLE DIAMETER OF THE SIZE FRACTIONS, (3) MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF THE SIZE FRACTIONS, (4) PARTICLE SHAPE OF THE SIZE FRACTIONS, (5) RELATIVE HUMIDITY OF THE AMBIENT ATMOSPHERE, (6) ELECTROSTATIC CHARGE OF THE SLIDING TEST PLATE, AND (7) HEATING OF THE PARTICLE SIZE FRACTIONS. SUBSTITUTION OF AN ATMOSPHERE CONSISTING OF NITROGEN, OXYGEN OR CARBON DIOXIDE FOR THE AMBIENT AIR WAS FOUND TO HAVE LITTLE OR NO EFFECT. ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR'S TEST RESULTS, MATERIALS WITH A MORE LESS POROUS SURFACE CONDITION BEHAVE SIMILARLY TO MATERIALS WITH A WELL DEFINED SURFACE CONDITION. THE PRESENCE OF RELATIVELY SMALL PROPORTIONS OF APPRECIABLY COARSER PARTICLE SIZE FRACTIONS SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECT THE ADHESIVE POWER OF A SIZE FRACTION. THE ADHESIVE POWER IS REDUCED BY THE PRESENCE OF PROPORTIONS OF COARSER FRACTIONS. ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT TESTS, IT IS, IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE TECHNICAL REDUCTION OF THE ADHESIVE POWER OF FINELY GRANULAR MATERIALS, ADVISABLE TO EMPLOY SUITABLE ADDITIVES. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ADDITIVES CAN BE DETERMINED BY MEANS OF SLIDING ADHESION MEASUREMENTS ON PARTICLE SIZE FRACTIONS WITHIN THE CLOSEST POSSIBLE LIMITS. IN THIS WAY, WITH DUE REGARD TO THE COST OF THE ADDITIVE, OPTIMUM REDUCTION OF THE ADHESIVE POWER OF THE FINE-GRAINED MATERIAL CAN BE ACHIEVED /AUTHOR/
