SOME OBSERVATIONS ON LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE YIELD PROBLEMS

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF SOME OF THE BASIC PROPERTIES OF LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE CONCRETE. THE EFFECT OF MIX DESIGN ON YIELD IS DISCUSSED. YIELD IS DEFINED AS THE VOLUME OF CONCRETE OBTAINED PER SACK OF CEMENT. IT IS SOMETINES EXPRESSED AS THE NUMBER OF CUBIC FEET IN A THEORETICAL CUBIC YARD OF CONCRETE. THREE METHODS USED FOR DESIGNING LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE ARE DESCRIBED: VOLUMETRIC, ABSOLUTE VOLUME, AND SPECIFIC GRAVITY FACTOR. VARIABLES SUCH AS AIR CONTENT AND CONTAMINATION OF AGGREGATE STOCKPILES ARE DISCUSSED. INCREASED VERSATILITY AND ECONOMY ARE OBTAINED USING LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES IN CONCRETE.
