A TEN-YEAR INVESTIGATION OF THE RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE TO SULPHATE SOLUTIONS BY MEANS OF THE ULTRASONIC TESTING METHOD

THE DEGREE OF RESISTANCE OF CEMENTS TO SULPHATE ATTACK CAN BE INDICATED BY MEANS OF A SULPHATE RESISTANCE FACTOR. THE VALUES FOUND FOR THIS FACTOR SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING POINTS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR INCREASING THE SULPHATE RESISTANCE: /1/ CONCRETES WITH A HIGHER CEMENT CONTENT AND THAT ARE WELL COMPACTED HAVE BETTER RESISTANCE, /2/ PORTLAND CEMENTS WITH A LOW CONTENT OF TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE HAVE GOOD RESISTANCE TO ATTACK, /3/ MIXED CEMENTS SHOW GOOD RESISTANCE VALUES. THE SULPHATE RESISTANCE APPEARS TO DEPEND, ON THE ONE HAND, UPON THE TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE CONTENT OF THE CLINKER AND, ON THE OTHER, UPON THE FINENESS AND ACTIVITY OF THE POZZOLANIC ADMIXTURE, AND /4/ IN CERTAIN CIRCUMATANCES AIR-ENTRAINING AGENTS MAY ARREST THE SULPHATE ATTACK, BUT THEY ARE LESS EFFECTIVE THAN THE 1ST AND 2ND MEASURES. HOWEVER, AIR- ENTRAINING AGENTS SHOULD BE USED WITH CAUTION SINCE MANY OF THEM ACTULLY REDUCE THE SULPHATE RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE. CONCRETE TEST SPECIMENS MADE WITH CEMENTS OF LOW TRICALCIUM ALUMINATE CONTENT, POZZOLANIC CEMENTS AND PORTLAND BLASTFURNACE CEMENTS, AS ALSO CEMENTS WITH FLY-ASH, YIELDED HIGH VALUES FOR THE SULPHATE RESISTANCE FACTOR EVEN AFTER 8 TO TEN YEARS' STORAGE IN SULPHATE MEDIA. /AUTHOR/
