MICROSCOPIC STUDY ON ALITE IN PORTLAND CEMENT CLINKER

THE CRYSTAL FIGURE OF ALITE IN PORTLAND CEMENT CLINKER HAS TRIGONAL SYMMETRY, AND THE CRYSRAL FACES ARE (0001), (1102) AND (1011), BUT WITH NONUNIFORM BIREFRIGENCE. THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF ALITE, HOWEVER, IS INVERTED ON COLLING FROM THE TRIGONAL FORM TO THE MONOCLINIC FORM, AND THE UNIQUE AXIS, B, OF THE MONOCLINIC FORM OF EACH DOMAIN, IS CONINCIDENT TO ONE OF THREE HORIZONTAL AXES, OF THE TRIGONAL FORM, RESPECTIVELY, AND 3-FLOD INVERSION TWINNING HAS OCCURRED. IN RARE CASES, CRYSTALS IN WHICH THE TRICLINIC INVERSIONS HAVE OCCURRED HAVE THE INVERSION POLYSYNTHETIC TWINNING WITH THE TWIN BANDS PARALLEL TO THE C-AXIS OF THE TRIGONAL FIGURE. THE TWINNINGS OF THE TRIGONAL METHOD, THE TWINNING PLANES (1102) AND (0001), ARE COMMON. THE TWINNING OF (1102) IS USUALLY FOUND, BUT THAT OF (0001) IS HARDLY FOUND IF THE TRICLINIC-INVERSION POLYSYNTHETIC TWINNING HAS NOT OCCURRED, BECAUSE THE NONUNIFORMITY OF BIREFRIGENCE OF THE MONOCLINIC- INVERTED CRYSTAL IS NOT SO MUCH AS THAT OF THE TRICLINIC- INVERTED CRYSTAL. /AUTHOR/
