A DISCUSSION OF LABORATORY AND FIELD EXPERIENCE WITH PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE SEALERS

A STATISTICALLY DESIGNED EXPERIMENT TO EVALUATE CONCRETE SEALANTS IS DESCRIBED. ONE HUNDRED FORTY SLABS OF GOOD GRADE PAVEMENT CONCRETE AT THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF AIR- ENTRAINMENT WERE CURED UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS. THEY WERE COATED WITH 10 DIFFERENT SEALANTS AND THEN SUBJECTED TO UP TO 100 FREEZE-THAW CYCLES WHILE COVERED WITH 4 PERCENT SOLUTIONS OF ROCK SALT AND CALCIUM CHLORIDE. EACH SLAB WAS RATED INDEPENDENTLY BY THREE DIFFERENT RATERS AT 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, 75, AND 100 CYCLES ON A SCALE OF 0 REPRESENTING NO SCALING TO 5 REPRESENTING SEVERE SCALING. AVERAGE SURFACE CONDITION RATINGS FOR REGULAR CONCRETE SEALER (A TAR-BASED SEALANT), CLEAR CONCRETE SEALER (A RESIN-BASED SEALANT), 50 PERCENT BOILED LINSEED OIL-50 PERCENT MINERAL SPIRITS (INCLUDED AS A STANDARD), BLACK CONCRETE SEALER (INCLUDED SO THERE WOULD BE MORE THAN ONE BLACK MATERIAL TO REDUCE ANY TENDENCY FOR BIAS BY THE RATERS), AND FOR UNTREATED ARE COMPARED. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE 50 PERCENT BOILED LINSEED OIL GAVE GOOD PROTECTION IN THE EARLY STAGES OF THE EXPERIMENT BUT AS THE NUMBER OF CYCLES INCREASED, THE RATING FOR LINSEED OIL WENT UP MORE RAPIDLY THAN FOR ANY OF THE OTHER COATINGS, INDICATING A LOWER LEVEL OF PROTECTION TOWARD THE END OF THE EXPERIMENT. REGULAR, CLEAR, AND BLACK CONCRETE SEALER ALL GAVE GOOD PROTECTION, WITH REGULAR BEING MARKEDLY SUPERIOR. FIELD INSTALLATIONS OF REGULAR AND CLEAR CONCRETE SEALERS ARE EVALUATED AND DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
