THE EFFECTS OF MOISTURE LOSS AT EARLY AGES ON THE SUBSEQUENT HYDRATION OF CEMENT
A COMPARATIVE STUDY IS BEING CONDUCTED OF THE PERFORMANCE OF A PORTLAND CEMENT AND VARIOUS MIXTURES OF THIS CEMENT AND A BLASTFURNACE SLAG, WHEN EXPOSED TO SEVERE DRYING CONDITIONS AFTER INITIAL PERIODS OF SEALED STORAGE. IN ALL CASES THE ONLY WATER AVAILABLE FOR HYDRATION OF THE CEMENT WAS THAT CONTAINED IN PORE SPACE AT THE TIME OF CASTING. EVAPORATION OF MIXING WATER PRIOR TO EXPOSURE TO THE DRYING ATMOSPHERE WAS PREVENTED BY STORING SPECIMENS IN POLYTHENE BAGS.
