FATIGUE OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

THE PURPOSE IS TO SUMMARIZE THE PRESENT KNOWLEDGE REGARDING THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS FACTORS WHICH AFFECTS THE FATIGUE PERFORMANCE OF BITUMINOUS MIXES UNDER REPEATED APPLICATIONS OF LOAD. ONE OF THE DIFFICULTIES IN INTERPRETING FATIGUE TEST RESULTS ARISES FROM THE FACT THAT THEY ARE INFLUENCED BY THE METHOD OF TESTING AND THE RESULTS OF TESTS AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES AND SPEEDS UNDER BOTH CONTROLLED STRESS AND CONTROLLED STRAIN ARE CONSIDERED. IT IS SHOWN THAT STIFFNESS PLAYS A PREDOMINATN ROLE IN DETERMINING FATIGUE BEHAVIOR AND MAXIMUM PRINCIPAL STRAIN IS A GOOD CRITERION OF CRACK INITIATION. THE EFFECT OF MIX VARIABLES SUCH AS AGGREGATE TYPE AND GRADING, FILLER CONTENT, BINDER TYPE, VISCOSITY AND CONTENT, AND DEGREE OF COMPACTION, ALL AFFECT THE FATIGUE PERFORMANCE OF BITUMINOUS MIXES BUT THEY CAN BE LARGELY ACCOUNTED FOR BY THEIR EFFECT ON THREE MAIN FACTORS, NAMELY, STIFFNESS, BITUMEN CONTENT AND VOIDS CONTENT. IT APPEARS THAT IN ORDER TO OBTAIN MAXIMUM FATIGUE LIFE FOR CRACK INITIATION THE QUANTITIES OF FILLER AND BINDER IN A MIX SHOULD BE SUCH THAT A CONDITION OF MAXIMUM STIFFNESS ASSOCIATED WITH MINIMUM VOIDS IS PRODUCED. /AUTHOR/
