FRACTIONAL COMPONENTS OF ASPHALTS-COMPATIBILITY AND INTERCHANGEABILITY OF FRACTIONS PRODUCED FROM DIFFERENT ASPHALTS

THE WORK WAS UNDERTAKEN TO ESTABLISH QUANTITATIVELY THE COMPATIBILITY AND INTERCHANGEABILITY OF FRACTIONAL COMPONENTS ISOLATED FROM DIFFERENT ASPHALTS. FOUR ASPHALTS, OF DIFFERENT CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND FROM DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGIN (CALIFORNIA, VENEZUELA, ARKANSAS, ALBERTA) WERE SEPARATED INTO CONCENTRATES OF FIVE COMPONENTS: ASPHALTENES, NITROGEN BASES, FIRST ACIDAFFINS, SECOND ACIDAFFINS, AND PARAFFINS. THE COMPONENTS WERE BLENDED IN VARIOUS PROPORTIONS TO DETERMINE THE COMPOSITION LIMITS WITHIN WHICH THE RECONSTITUTED ASPHALTS WERE FREE OF SYNERESIS. IN THE ABSENCE OF ASPHALTENES, ALL FRACTIONAL COMPONENTS ARE COMPATIBLE. IN THE PRESENCE OF ASPHALTENES, COMPATIBILITY DEPENDS PRIMARILY ON THE PROPORTIONS OF NITROGEN BASES AND PARAFFINS, EXPRESSED AS THE RATIO N/P. VARIATION FOUND FROM ONE ASPHALT TO ANOTHER IN THE RATIO OF NITROGEN BASES TO PARAFFINS TO INSURE COMPATIBILITY OF THE BLEND ARE CAUSED BY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ASPHALTENES FRACTION. THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF FRACTION "A" AND ITS CONTENT OF CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS OF THE NATURE OF NITROGEN BASES APPEAR RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EFFECT OF ASPHALTENES ON COMPATIBILITY. THE INTERCHANGEABILITY OF FRACTIONAL COMPONENTS WAS STUDIED BY CROSSBLENDING OF THE COMPONENTS PRODUCED FROM THE FOUR ASPHALTS. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ASPHALTENES, COMPONENTS FROM DIFFERENT ASPHALTS ARE SUFFICIENTLY SIMILAR IN PROPERTIES TO BE INTERCHANGEABLE. THE DURABILITY OF AN ASPHALT DEPENDS ON THE PROPORTIONS OF FRACTIONAL COMPONENTS. THE EFFECT OF SOURCE OF THE COMPONENTS WAS SHOWN TO BE MINOR. THE FINDINGS DEMONSTRATE THAT ASPHALT QUALITY CAN BE IMPROVED BY BLENDING TO CHANGE THE PROPORTIONS OF MALTENES COMPONENTS TO DESIRABLE COMPOSITION RATIOS. /AUTHOR/
