INFLUENCE OF MIXTURE VARIABLES ON THE DIRECT TENSILE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT CONCRETE AND DISCUSSION

TENSILE FAILURE OF ASPHALT CONCRETE CAN BE COMBATTED BY INCORPORATING CERTAIN CONSIDERATIONS INTO THE PROCEDURES FOR MIXTURE AND PAVEMENT DESIGN, BUT FOR THIS IT IS NECESSARY THAT DEFINITIVE INFORMATION ON THE TENSILE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALT PAVING MIXTURES BE DEVELOPED. IN THE PRESENT STUDY LABORATORY TENSION TESTS WERE CONDUCTED WITH TWO SETS OF VARIABLES: LOADING REGIME (DIRECT TENSION, CONTROLLED STRESS RATE) AND MIXTURE CHARACTERISTICS (ASPHALT TYPE AND HARDNESS, AGGREGATE TYPE AND GRADATION, SPECIMEN STIFFNESS AND ASPHALT CONTENT). AMONG THE CONCLUSIONS IS THAT SIGNIFICANT INCREASES IN ASPHALT CONTENT ABOVE THAT REQUIRED FOR ADEQUATE STABILITY ARE NECESSARY TO IMPROVE THE TENSILE STRAIN PROPERTIES OF MIXES DESIGNED ACCORDING TO CALIFORNIA PRACTICES.
