THE PAVEMENT PROFILER - A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR EVALUATING HIGHWAYS

A NEW MACHINE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR MEASURING PAVEMENT DEFLECTIONS UNDER DYNAMIC STRESS CONDITIONS. THIS DATA PERMITS THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A HIGHWAY TO BE QUICKLY CALCULATED FOR ANY KNOWN VOLUME OF TRAFFIC. THIS MACHINE PERMITS ACQUISITION OF FIELD DEFLECTION DATA FASTER AND AT LESS COST THAN BY ANY OTHER DEVICE NOW AVAILABLE. THIS MACHINE WAS DEVELOPED TO PERMIT NONDESTRUCTIVE MEASUREMENT OF SUBGRADE SUPPORT VALUES UNDER THE DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS WHICH ACTUALLY PREVAIL, RATHER THAN UNDER STATIC LOADING. HOWEVER, TO PERMIT CORRELATION WITH THE LARGE MASS OF BENKELMAN BEAM DATA NOW AVAILABLE, IT CAN BE SET AT A SPECIFIC STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOAD AND FREQUENCY THAT WILL EXACTLY REPRODUCE STANDARD BENKELMAN BEAM READINGS. /AUTHOR/
