A REVIEW OF CURRENT EUROPEAN PRACTICES FOR LABORATORY EVALUATION OF SKID RESISTANCE OF PAVEMENTS

RESEARCH IN FOUR COUNTRIES ON SKID RESEARCH IS SUMMARIZED. VISITS WERE MADE TO THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY (ENGLAND), THE LABORATORIRE CENTRAL DES PONTS ET CHAUSSEES (FRANCE), THE CENTRE DE RECHERCHES ROUTIERES (BELGIUM), AND THE TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITAET BERLIN (WEST GERMANY). RECENT STUDIES & STUDIES NOW IN PROGRESS FALL INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: ENGLAND - AN ACCELERATED WEAR TEST MACHINE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO DETERMINE FACTORS AFFECTING THE SKID RESISTANCE OF PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE ROADS. TWO CONCLUSIONS FROM RESEARCH WITH THIS MACHINE ARE THAT INCREASED CEMENT CONTENT AND CUBE CRUSHING STRENGTH RESULT IN A HIGHER DEGREE OF POLISH AND POORER SKID RESISTANCE AT LOW SPEEDS, WHILE MIXES WITH HIGH CEMENT CONTENT RETAINED THEIR ROUGH TEXTURE BETTER; AND THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC OF THE AGGREGATE SEEMS TO BE FINES HARDNESS. STUDIES HAVE ALSO BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF RETEXTURING WORN CONCRETE SURFACES, ON THE BRAKING PERFORMANCE OF AIRCRAFT TIRES ON WET PAVEMENT SURFACES, ON THE SKIDDING AND BRAKING CHARACTERISTICS OF COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE EUROPEAN AUTOMOBILE TIRES, ON STEREOPHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES OF DETERMINING ROAD SURFACE TEXTURE, ON ARTIFI- CIAL AGGREGATES & VARIOUS SKIDTESTING MACHINES. FRANCE SURFACE TEXTURE IS BEING MEASURED BY RUBBER MOLDS AND BY STEREOPHOTOGRAPHIC AND NEEDLE PROFILOGRAPH TECHNIQUES. ASPECTS OF DRAINAGE FROM PAVEMENT SURFACES ARE BEING INVESTIGATED. BELGIUM - A TRANSVERSE GROOVING MACHINE FOR USE ON FRESH CONCRETE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. STUDIES OF TEXTURIZED CONCRETE SURFACING REMAIN IN PROGRESS. VARIATIONS IN THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OF PAVEMENT SURFACE WITH CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE ARE UNDER ANALYSIS. WEST GERMANY - THE EFFECTS OF STUDDED TIRES ON SKID RESISTANCE AND PAVEMENT WEAR ARE BEING STUDIED. IT WAS FOUND THAT WHILE SKID RESISTANCE ON WET PAVEMENTS IS IMPROVED IN THE FIRST STAGES OF WEAR, IN LATER STAGES A SURFACE WILL DEVELOP THAT IS FORMED ONLY INDIVIDUAL LARGE STONES EXPOSED TO VERY INTENSE POLISHING ACTION BY THE TIRES.
