PAVEMENT SERVICEABILITY EQUATIONS USING THE SURFACE DYNAMICS PROFILOMETER

THE SURFACE DYNAMICS PROFILOMETER MANUFACTURED BY K.J. LAW ENGINEERS, INC., WHICH HAS AN EXCELLENT COMBINATION OF ACCURACY AND HIGH OPERATING SPEED, WAS USED ON ROADS IN SEVERAL STATES TO MEASURE PAVEMENT SERVICEABILITY RATING (PRS). THE RESULTS WERE COMPARED WITH RATINGS SUBMITTED BY A PANEL OF 15 TYPICAL ROAD USERS AND FOUND TO BE CONSISTENT WITH THEIR JUDGMENT. IN ADDITION, COMPUTER PROGRAMS WERE DEVELOPED TO SUMMARIZE PROFILOMETER DATA INTO A SINGLE NUMBER FOR USE IN REGRESSION ANALYSES, EQUATIONS WERE DEVELOPED FOR RELATING PSR VALUES TO PROFILOMETER SUMMARY STATISTICS, AND THE PREDICTIVE QUALITY OF THE EQUATIONS WAS VERIFIED BY TWO SEPARATE CHECKS WITH PANEL RATINGS. ALTHOUGH VERY ACCURATE, PROFILE MEASUREMENTS ARE EXPENSIVE AND THE ANALYSES ARE TIME-CONSUMING; THE IMPACT OF THESE DRAWBACKS MIGHT BE DECREASED IF PRESENT SENSORS WERE REPLACED WITH NONCONTACT PROBES. THE EQUATIONS DEVELOPED WERE APPLICABLE TO RIGID AND FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS AND TO BOTH SINGLE AND DOUBLE WHEEL PATHS. /AUTHOR/
