RECOVERING BITUMINOUS MATERIAL FROM AGGREGATES WITHOUT CHANGING ITS CHARACTER

A BRIEF REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF METHODS USED TO RECOVER BITUMINOUS MATERIAL FROM AGGREGATES. THE PREFERRED PROCEDURE SEEMS TO BE TO USE BENZOL AS A SOLVENT AND EXTRACT WITH CENTRIFUGE OF THE ROTAREX TYPE OR REFLEX APPARATUS. RECOVERY BY THE ASTM METHOD USING THE NY TESTING LABORATORY EXTRACTOR HAS MORE SUPPORT THAN OTHER METHODS. THIS METHOD IS PARTICULARLY GOOD FOR ASPHALTIC BINDER. THE METHOD OF WALCZAK AND RICE IS DESCRIBED. IT IS BASED ON THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF THE TWO SUBSTANCES, BITUMEN AND MINERAL AGGREGATE, EACH MUTUALLY INSOLUABLE IN THE OTHER. AN APPARATUS IS DESCRIBED FOR THIS TEST.
