THE COMPUTATION OF ROAD DEFLECTIONS UNDER IMPULSIVE LOADS FROM THE RESULTS OF VIBRATION MEASUREMENTS

A METHOD IS DESCRIBED OF INTERPRETING FIELD DATA OBTAINED ON ROADS WHEN USING THE IMPEDANCE METHOD OF VIBRATION TESTING. THIS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED BY USING A SEVEN PARAMETER MATHEMATICAL MODEL WHICH ENABLES THE SHAPE AND AMPLITUDE OF DYNAMIC ROAD DEFLECTIONS, SUCH AS PRODUCED BY IMPULSES CAUSED BY MOVING TRAFFIC, TO BE CALCULATED WITH REASONABLE ACCURACY. IT IS SHOWN THAT A THREE PARAMETER MODEL (SIMPLEST SYSTEM) IS INADEQUATE FOR ANALYSIS WHERE THE LOADING TIMES ON THE ROAD ARE LONG (I.E. LOW FREQUENCIES OR SLOW MOVING VEHICLE) BUT MAY BE USED FOR SHORT LOADING TIMES (I.E. HIGH FREQUENCIES OR FAST MOVING TRAFFIC). AN OUTLINE OF THE MATHEMATICAL INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS OF THE IMPEDANCE METHOD OF TESTING IS GIVEN AND THE RESULTS FROM TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROAD CONSTRUCTION ARE DISCUSSED AND ANALYZED IN TERMS OF VEHICLE SPEED. /ARTICLE/
